OpenAI has hired Patreon co-founder Sam Yam to lead a new Creator Product team developing AI tools for creators. Yam, joined by two former Patreon executives, says human creativity remains paramount and AI can be a valuable creative instrument. An early look may come at OpenAI DevDay next week.

OpenAI is developing a fresh set of tools aimed at creators, as its AI systems grow more capable of producing text, images, audio, and video. To lead this effort, the company has brought on Sam Yam, who co-founded Patreon, to head a newly formed "Creator Product" division. Tensions between AI firms and the creative community have persisted for years, with many artists and makers viewing generative AI as an existential risk—whether because models are trained on copyrighted material or because automated output can replace their livelihoods.

Yam tackled that friction directly, stating that human creativity is still "paramount" and that creators hold the ability to "shape culture" and "unite diverse communities." He also believes AI can serve as a valuable creative instrument. "I'm looking forward to bringing many more of their ideas to life," Yam writes.

After more than 13 years at Patreon, Yam is departing the company. He is taking Drew Rowny and Shannon Ma with him—Patreon's former heads of product and engineering. Together, the team will create tools Yam described as "critically valuable" for creators and their audiences. An initial glimpse may arrive at OpenAI DevDay next week.
