Spotify launches 'Taste Profile' in the US, giving users control over its recommendation algorithm
Spotify has launched Taste Profile in the US, an AI-driven feature first announced at SXSW and beta-tested in New Zealand. It gives users direct control over the recommendation engine behind Discover Weekly and Made for You. Users can adjust genre, artist, or mood preferences and filter unwanted content like sleep sounds. Accessible via the mobile app, updates appear within hours, though availability in other regions remains unannounced.
Spotify is expanding access to Taste Profile, an AI-driven feature that lets users directly shape the recommendations appearing in their Home feed. First announced in March at SXSW in Austin by co-CEO Gustav Söderström, the tool was initially limited to a beta in New Zealand. Its arrival in Spotify's biggest market by traffic and revenue means millions of listeners aged 18 and up will now test it at scale.
A Direct Line to the Algorithm
In effect, Taste Profile hands users some control over the recommendation engine that powers Spotify's most beloved features — including Discover Weekly, its Made for You suggestions, and the yearly Wrapped recap. While the company's algorithmic reading of listening habits is widely seen as central to its success, those suggestions don't always keep pace with changing tastes, and the service can default to music that sounds too similar when listeners actually want something different.
Fine-Tuning What You Hear
By editing their Taste Profile, users can ask for more variety, request more or less of a specific genre, artist, or mood. It can also filter out things people stream routinely but don't want amplified — like nighttime sleep sounds, or a teenager's picks playing on a family account. Spotify previously allowed only limited exclusions of certain tracks or playlists, and recently added a toggle that stops kids' music from influencing parents' recommendations.
How to Use It
In the mobile app, tap your profile picture, scroll to Taste Profile, and browse how Spotify currently interprets your preferences across music, podcasts, and audiobooks. Under "Tell us more," type what you'd like changed and submit. Within a few hours, your Home feed will show updated suggestions. The feature suits anyone exploring a new genre or era without knowing where to begin, or those seeking a shift in energy. The tool remains in beta, and Spotify has not said when it will reach more regions.
