YouTube Music introduces new AI features for more natural conversations
YouTube Music announced two AI-powered features at its Made On YouTube event. Ask Music enables conversational search, letting users describe what they want to hear in natural language while drawing on a catalog of over 300 million tracks and answering music-related questions. Your Podcast Lineup offers a weekly, personalized AI-generated audio guide for podcast discovery. These updates reflect YouTube's broader AI push amid competition with rivals like Spotify.
YouTube Music is introducing a pair of AI-driven features designed to help listeners uncover songs, learn about artists, and stumble upon podcasts they might otherwise never find. Announced at this year's Made On YouTube event, the additions reflect the platform's growing effort to weave artificial intelligence into everyday listening.
Ask Music: Search by Conversation
The first feature, called Ask Music, is a conversational tool built directly into the YouTube Music app. Rather than typing a song title or artist name into a search box, users describe what they want to hear in plain, everyday language—much like they would when talking to a friend.
Ask Music draws on YouTube Music's catalog of more than 300 million tracks, spanning official releases, remixes, live versions, covers, and DJ sets. Beyond building custom listening queues, the tool can answer questions about music itself. For example, a listener could ask for a mix built around the tracks that influenced a particular song, or inquire about who played bass on a given recording and other details behind its creation.
Your Podcast Lineup: A Weekly Audio Guide
The second addition targets podcast discovery. With more shows available than anyone could reasonably follow, even dedicated listeners often fall behind on favorites and rarely branch out to new ones.
Your Podcast Lineup addresses that gap with a personalized, AI-generated audio guide that appears on the podcast page in the YouTube Music app. Each week, it delivers a short spoken preview of recommended shows, explains why they might suit the listener's tastes, and then transitions directly into suggested episodes—making discovery feel like part of the listening experience rather than a separate chore.
Part of a Larger AI Push
The updates align with a wider strategy at YouTube to embed AI across its services. Competitors are moving in the same direction: Spotify recently launched its own AI-powered personal podcasts feature, which generates episodes tailored to a user's interests and prompts.
YouTube Music itself experimented with AI last year, testing music hosts that offered stories, fan trivia, and commentary tied to whatever a listener was playing at the moment.
What to watch next is how listeners respond to conversational discovery. If Ask Music and Your Podcast Lineup drive engagement, expect YouTube to deepen these tools—and expect rivals to accelerate their own AI-powered listening features.
